He was my schoolmate. We did not go to the same primary school, but we met in high school and became pals. He was really clever, often came second or third in our class. His mum was a teacher and taught at a different school, and his dad was the headteacher at another, so smarts ran in their family.

After high school, we went our separate ways. He studied electrical engineering, while I somehow miraculously ended up in the computer science field. Years later, I ran into him in the countryside, where he was in charge of a mobile telecom company. We met up for drinks, and I was surprised when he said he had a strong interest in computer programmings and that he envied my life and job.

During the COVID pandemic, I met him again at a Japanese restaurant. He talked about his life, work, and family. He was studying Java programming and asked me to guide him. I gladly agreed and set up a Zoom call the next day to share my Java knowledge. Our first session ended successfully. I asked him to join the next day at the same time, but he never showed up. I called him, but he did not answer. Just like that he ghosted me without any explanation, leaving me wondering what happened.

A few days ago, I bumped into one of the old schoolmates. She asked me about him since I was the last one had contact with him. I made up a story that he was fine. Now that I am back in town, I thought I would give it one more try. I texted him to check if he was in town, but he was out of town and said he would be back in about five days. I took his response positively.

Five days later, I texted him again, suggesting we meet up when he's free. He replied, "sure," but days passed, and nothing happened. Yesterday, I texted him again, asking when he would be free, but he left my message on read.

I wondered why.
