Julia and Christophe set out for Mrauk-U, a medieval town, famous for the ancient temples, in northern Rakhine state.
Two weeks later I met them at a dinner party that they hosted at their residence.
“Mrauk-U is beautiful,” Julia tried to start a conversation.
"We stayed overnight in Sittwe and rented a boat through our hotel receptionist to get there the next day. It was an awful six hours boat ride and the journey was somewhat uneventful, but we shall never forget that sunrise moment we
saw from our boat on a misty morning on the river.”
“It was spectacular” she added. “Just beyond my words to describe how majestic and magnificent I felt”
I saw the spark in her eyes and knew that she was quite chuffed about the experience.
That was about 9 years ago now.
Days passed and accumulated into months, months turned into years, and years rolled, and almost turning into a decade now but the word “Mrauk-U” still lingers in my mind.
I didn’t realise that she planted a seed in me back then.
I’ve travelled to Mrauk-U a zillion times in my daydreams… and it has become one of the juicy subjects that I like to tell everyone I meet how much I love to travel there and on… obviously an unhealthy obsession of mine now but it
remains a mystery to me why I have never tried to make it happen in real life yet.
