🌹 Happy 81, Daw Suu 🌹

I’ve found more warmth, more wholehearted love, more tenderness, more courage, and more caring concern among my people, as we hope together, we suffer together and struggle together, than anywhere else in the world Aung San Suu Kyi Letter from Burma (1997)

Losing a job in this adversity isn’t fun but telling people that I got laid off isn’t as hard as I think. I first shared the news with Dad after work. I gave him ins and outs. After our lengthy conversation over the phone, he sympathised and encouraged me to stay motivated.

“You must share the news with Mum,” he suggested.

“Nah, I will text her.” I have my reasons.

“Chick chick chicken” he teased me.

I ignored him and texted her - Mum I have got bad news for you. I got laid off today. There were many and I unfortunately happened to be one of them.

She didn’t see the message.

Eventually, I ended up dialling her. We started the conversation with the usual pleasantries, and then I broke the news.

Her immediate response was: I’m sorry but this is not the end of the world. You won’t starve to death.

“That’s not even the point,” I tried to argue back.

She ignored me but couldn’t hide her glee.

You have nowhere to go now but home.

She wants me to come back home.

I ran away from home to live by myself in a politically unstable border town. Home was the last place I wanted to go.

I must find a new job.
